The Romans love a good festival and April is a particular month they have loads, Easter is just one of them. So we are going to be celebrating ALL OF THEM
We will have our Mercatus - Market with goods to delight
& Stalls can be found inside the Officers Quarters
Roma Antiqua will be doing show and tell in the living history area and
we will be joined by some Sasanians on Sunday
Games and Demonstrations, possible weapons display (weather permitting)

On the 1st April, there was the Veneralia, the festival of Venus Verticordia, a particular aspect of the goddess of love, relating to love and marriage.
On the 4th-10th April, the Ludi Megalenses or Megalesia were held, the festival and games held in honour of the Magna Mater (‘great mother’) Cybele.
On the 12th-19th April, the Cerialia or Ludi Cereri were held, the festival and games in honour of Ceres, the goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and maternity.
On the 14th April, there was the festival of Fordicidia, when a pregnant cow was offered to Tellus (the earth). ( We will do a symbolic offering only)
EASTER 14-17th April
The Christian celebration of EASTER is always held on the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal full moon) following the March equinox, and it has links with the Jewish Passover.
On the 27th April-3rd May, the Ludi Florales were held in honour of Flora, the goddess of flowers and the season of spring.

Car Parking Information
Arbeia Roman Fort is located between South Shields town centre and the sea front at the top of the Lawe Top.
BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT
South Shields Metro & Bus Station, then on foot in a 10-15 minute walk. Leaving the town centre head along Ocean road towards the sea front, you will see a stone pillar with a Roman soldier on at the corner of Ocean Road and Baring Street. Turn left here and follow the road up until you find the Fort.
BY CAR/COACH/TAXI
If travelling by car follow the brown tourist road signs with a Roman helmet on from the A19 into South Shields town centre. From here Arbeia continues to be signposted, but if you lose a sign ensure you stick to the A183 which becomes Ocean Road. Turn left onto Baring Street and continue to the top of the hill where you will find the Fort.
Street parking is available situated opposite Hadrian Primary School. There are two coaching bays on Baring Street. Coaches and taxis can drop off at the main gates. Sponsored Advertisers
