Event Details
We are returning once again to Abingdon Abbey Medieval Buildings. It was a bit of a disappointment last year, excellent quality of customer, just not enough of them.

We have moved it back to the original date the half term holidays at the end of October. We are only trading one week instead of two. We are rebranding it under the Mistletoe Fair branding and our marketing efforts will be focused on this. We are talking to a number of Coach Companies and anticipate a number of coaches visiting this year.

The Fair has been running since 1970 and has a fantastic reputation. Some history of the buildings, at the time of its dissolution, the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary at Abingdon was the sixth wealthiest monastery in England. The Abbey was a vast complex of buildings, courtyards, gardens and orchards. The two groups of buildings which survive are only a small fragment of this once grand establishment. The Abbey Gateway faces the Market Place and is flanked by St Nicolas Church and the former St John’s Hospital. These are now part of the Guild Hall under the care of Abingdon Town Council.

A second group of buildings, cared for by the http://www.friendsofabingdon.org.uk/, and situated by the Millstream in Thames Street, consists of the Bakehouse (now converted into the Unicorn Theatre), the Checker Hall and Checker and the Long Gallery. The outline of the Abbey Church can be seen in the Abbey Gardens.

Abingdon-on-Thames is the former County town of Berkshire until 1974 it is now in Oxfordshire. It is the former home of MG cars it has a heritage going back to the Bronze age. This ancient market town is now surrounded by scientific research facilities such as Harwell.

The fair will be held within the medieval buildings and a few small marquees outside, the only downside of this venue is the lack of room for set up. We will have plenty of porters on duty to help unload vehicles, and will organise the set up so as vehicles are in and out quickly, The buildings are a fantastic venue because of the shape not all stands will be 6ft depth as normal, some will be 4ft6 to adapt to the shape of the building.
